“Encarna
Anillo is the maximum expression of sweetness and beauty,
a complete cantaora who learns from tradition and the
maestros to say what she feels”
José Luis Ortiz Nuevo, writer
Encarna Anillo “is
going to be somebody in flamenco”. And the one
so foretelling is none other than ‘the lady of
cante’, maestra Carmen Linares, who is the young
Cádiz-born singer’s artistic sponsor. She’s
in her early twenties, but she is already an experienced
jondo vocalist, who might as easily collaborate with
flamenco bailaor Farruquito as with contemporary choreographer
Blanca Li. Solid fondness, extensive knowledge of cante,
perfect control of her voice and exquisite feeling when
performing are combined in her art, as experts, enthusiasts
and colleagues in the business agree. And she thus demonstrates
on ‘Barcas de plata’, her first solo album,
a record produced by Miguel Poveda on which the classical
and the present connect naturally.
‘Barcas de plata’
is a dream come true. Encarna Anillo was still a little
girl when she was carried away by the magic of La Caleta
beach in Cádiz, right at dusk, when the fishing
boats are tinged with a silvery sheen. And she knew
then that she was going to be a cantaora and that her
first album would capture those dreams forever. That’s
why her premiere album is a “veteran’s début”.
Although she belongs to a generation
of cantaores born in the eighties, she is an experienced
artist who has rubbed shoulders on stages with Chano
Lobato, with Duquende, with Miguel Poveda...; who has
accompanied baile figures of the likes of Israel Galván,
Belén Maya, Farruquito...; who collaborates as
a guest star in ‘Poeta en Nueva York’ by
Blanca Li, in ‘Desde el alma’ by Carmen
Linares, in ‘No hay quinto malo’ by Niña
Pastori, in ‘Gitanas’ by La Farruca... She
now possesses experience that dazzles when she gets
up on stage, a natural habitat where she grows, where
she expresses, where she feels, where she gets feelings
across, where she enhances flamenco, an art form she
loves limitlessly.
All of it is exalted, moreover, when
what she is performing is her dream. ‘Barcas de
plata’ live is a faithful staging of the album,
of its ten tracks, one by one. And she does so accompanied
by some of the most interesting guitarists on today’s
flamenco scene, such as Jerez-born Juan Diego, Juan
Requena, Algeciras-born José Manuel León...
But it’s not all music. Also important to her
is the dynamics, the intensity curve, the staging, so
that the concert turns out to be a full experience leading
not just to the ear, but also to the sight and heart
of those present. And the script is written by flamenco
cante itself: alegrías gaditanas, malagueñas,
milongas, bulerías, tangos trianeros, zambra,
soleá... A tour which calls upon memory, which
recalls historical maestros, but which also clings to
the present and to the personality of Encarna Anillo,
the cantaora of extreme sweetness, the cantaora of extreme
beauty.
‘En Cai la Lola’ alegrías
‘Haciendo por olvidarte’
malagueña y verdial
‘No hay tiempo’ bulerías
‘Carta a una salvaora’ zambra
‘Dios te compensará’ soleá
‘Si llegara a suceder’
milonga
‘Barcas de plata’ alegrías
‘Dulce veneno’ bulerías
‘Tangos del olivo’ tangos
‘Homenaje a La Perla’
bulerías
Encarna Anillo
(Cádiz, 1983). Cantaora
Encarna Anillo got
started in flamenco as a little girl, singing and dancing
at local contests in her hometown: Cádiz. As
a teenager she was already singing solo at festivals
in Andalusia, sharing the bill with figures of the likes
of Chano Lobato, Juan Villar, Mariana Cornejo, Terremoto,
Duquende and La Niña de la Puebla, among others.
In the facet of cante for baile, she
began together with bailaores such as Rafaela Carrasco,
Andrés Marín, Belén Maya, Rafael
Campallo and Farruquito, performing with all of them
on stages in Spain as well as international ones.
At Seville’s Bienal de Flamenco
in the year 2000, the cantaora takes part in several
shows. On the one hand, ‘Metamorfosis’ by
Sevillian bailaor Israel Galván, a show premiered
at the Teatro Lope de Vega. On the other hand, ‘Colores’
by bailaor Rafael de Carmen. And finally, in the performance
by the group of artists from Cádiz known as ‘Elenco
de Cádiz’. Three shows which served to
praise the talent of the young Cádiz-born cantaora.
In her training she goes on singing
for baile for the next two years, joining the companies
of Andrés Marín, Rafaela Carrasco, Farruquito
and Israel Galván. She stands out as a soloist
in a tour of Japan together with Chano Lobato, as well
as in a show within Barcelona’s Festival Grec,
accompanied on guitar by Chicuelo. Her good understanding
with the Catalan guitarist is signed and sealed in spring
2003, when they perform together on three more occasions.
The first, in the show ‘Flamenco en orquesta’
conducted by Joan Albert Amargós and performed
by cantaor Miguel Poveda. Second, on stage at the Palau
de la Música in Barcelona, where she shares the
bill together with Duquende. And the last, on a tour
of Japan within the Miguel Poveda Company.
In 2004, Sevillian bailaor Israel Galván
calls on her again for the show ‘Galvánicas’,
performing in Seville and Barcelona. Moreover, within
the Bienal de Flamenco, she takes part in ‘Sevilla’,
by Ortiz Nuevo; and sings again for Andrés Marín
in the show ‘Asimetrías’, achieving
great success in both. That same year, she collaborates
on two record projects: ‘No hay quinto malo’
(Ariola) by Niña Pastori and ‘Himno de
Andalucía’ (Universal).
In 2006 she combines her solo performances
at events as important as Barcelona’s Ciutat Vella
Festival and Madrid’s Veranos de la Villa Festival,
with her participation in the show ‘Gitanas’,
at the command of Rosario Montoya ‘La Farruca’.
That same season, she joins the Carmen Linares Company
as guest star in the show 'Desde el alma', together
with other artists like Carmelilla Montoya. She also
takes part in the recording of an audiovisual for the
sound company Bose, starring guitarist Juan Diego.
In summer 2007, she tackles the lead
role in the show 'Poeta en Nueva York' by Blanca Li,
performed throughout August at La Alhambra in Granada,
alternating the role with Carmen Linares. Then solo,
she provided a preview of the contents of her first
album, 'Barcas de plata', at Festival Málaga
en Flamenco 2007 at Gibralfaro Castle. The album, produced
by Miguel Poveda, will be released in early 2008 with
the record label Flamenco World Music. With the repertoire
off this first record, the Cádiz-born cantaora
starred in Flamenco-world.com’s 10th Anniversary,
which was celebrated at Tablao Las Carboneras in Madrid
on November 29th, 2007.

Encarna Anillo, huele a sal. La sal que mueve la brisa
en Cádiz. Cante clásico, sí, pero
suena a fresco en boca de esta debutante de 25 años

plata', by J.M.Velázquez-Gaztelu
"En el disco se refleja la riqueza estilística
de Anillo, su amplio repertorio, con diez cantes en
ocasiones diametralmente opuestos, tanto en estructura
musical como en concepto rítmico: la milonga
y la bulería, la zambra y la soleá, que
no sólo demuestran la versatilidad de esta cantaora,
sino su capacidad para asimilar el legado flamenco en
sus más variadas formas" See

“Rather sooner than later, we Andalusians will

FLAMENCO-WORLD.COM
Silvia Calado (Madrid, October 18th, 2007)
And without wasting much time, Carmen Linares left her
place to her artistic godchild. Encarna Anillo picked
up the invitation with the temperance of an expert.
She chose alegrías, which are nearly innate to
her, to start off. But she chewed them over slowly,
unhurriedly, pressing only when she found it convenient
EL PAÍS Fermín Lobatón (Málaga, September
2nd, 2007)
“Care was taken in the way sung by the Cádiz-born
artist, who offered a very extensive range of styles
treated exquisitely. Encarna managed to shift from the
firm quejío to sweet words by uttering the cante
with mature temperance”.
EL MUNDO Manuel Martín (Málaga, August 31st,
2007)
“Encarna Anillo has at her disposal a melodious
register capable of adapting, by means of art and compás,
to the mysteries of those unforgettable cantes which
make anyone’s soul’s hair stand on end,
such as the soleá and alegrías of her
native land, the malagueña, the bulerías
and the tientos chaconianos”
